What to expect at the Blaffer Art Museum

The Blaffer Art Museum presents contemporary art exhibitions alongside publications and public programs. The museum was founded in 1973, opening its inaugural exhibition season with a solo show by Texas artist Michael Tracy in September of that year. Its name honours Houston art patron Sarah Campbell Blaffer.

Exhibitions change, so the museum experience depends on what is on view when you visit. The focus on contemporary art and public programming gives the museum a place within the broader mix of things to include in a day in Houston.

The museum’s exhibitions and programs are free and open to the public. Its regular schedule is Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00pm to 5:00pm, with the museum closed on Sunday and Monday. Hours may not tell the whole story: Blaffer observes the University of Houston holiday schedule and other university closures, and may close between exhibitions for installation.

Because exhibition schedules and closures can affect a planned visit, check the official site before you go. The museum’s address is 4173 Elgin Street, Houston, TX 77204.
